Dr. Hilary P. Grocott is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine and the Department of Surgery at the University of Manitoba, and an Adjunct Professor of Anesthesiology at Duke University. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia and Director of the Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship Program.
His educational background includes:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Saskatchewan (1990)
- Anesthesia Residency at the University of Manitoba (1995)
- Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Research at Duke University
With over 20 years of research in cardiac anesthesia, Dr. Grocott's work centers on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) impacts on the brain, including cerebral injury mechanisms and neuroprotective strategies. His clinical research characterizes cognitive dysfunction after cardiac surgery and advances neuromonitoring techniques. Current investigations extend to perioperative inflammation's systemic effects on coagulation, renal function, and pulmonary systems, with active leadership in the TRICS-III transfusion triggers trial and cerebral oximetry multicenter studies.
Funding has been secured from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Dr. Grocott has mentored numerous post-graduate trainees and authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications.
Prior to 2007, he developed novel CPB animal models at Duke University that enabled translational neuroprotection research. His current clinical focus maintains active patient care in cardiac operating rooms and ICUs while directing collaborative research initiatives.
