Prof. Hilary Downes is a part-time Professor of Geochemistry at Birkbeck, University of London, affiliated with the School of Natural Sciences. He also serves as a Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum and is part of the Volcanologists of London research group. His academic career includes a BSc from Durham University, an MSc from the University of Calgary, and a PhD from the University of Leeds, focusing on the geochemistry of Cantal volcano.
Research interests span Igneous Petrology, Volcanology, Mantle Xenoliths, Lower Continental Crust studies, and Meteoritics, particularly ureilite meteorites from differentiated asteroids. Current projects include volcanic processes in the Cape Verde islands, CT scanning of mantle xenoliths, and subduction-zone volcanoes in Central America. He supervises 11 PhD students and has guided over a dozen researchers since 2013.
Key achievements include a Fellowship from the Geological Society and past leadership as President of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. His work integrates field studies, isotopic analysis, and experimental methods, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding Earth's interior and extraterrestrial materials.
