Hermano Igo Krebs serves as Principal Research Scientist at MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering while holding active Visiting Professor appointments at Fujita Health University (Japan), Osaka University (Japan), Loughborough University (UK), and Keio University (Japan). Previously, he held Adjunct Professor roles at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (2006-2022) and Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
His academic foundation includes a B.Sc. (1980) and M.Sc. (1987) from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, an M.Sc. (1989) from Yokohama National University, Japan, and a Ph.D. (1997) from MIT. Krebs directs the77lab (http://the77lab.mit.edu), where his research integrates mechanical engineering, neuroscience, and control systems to pioneer rehabilitation robotics solutions.
Krebs' work centers on Human-Robot Interactions and Rehabilitation Robotics, with expanding focus on Digital Transformation and Agricultural Robotics. His innovations include the MIT-Manus therapy system and multiple robotic rehabilitation devices, translating laboratory research into clinical applications through patented technologies and commercial ventures. Current projects emphasize human augmentation and biomechanics-driven digital health solutions.
His accolades include the 2009 Isabelle and Leonard H. Goldenson Technology and Rehabilitation Award, IEEE Fellow designation (2014), and the 2015 IEEE INABA Technical Award. Krebs also served as IEEE-EMBS Distinguished Lecturer (2021-2022) and contributes to scientific boards at University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome and Khalifa University.
As an entrepreneur, Krebs founded Interactive Motion Technologies (1998-2016), served as Chief Science Officer of Bionik Laboratories (2016-2017), and established 4Motion Robotics (2017). His service includes Veterans Administration Merit Review Board leadership (2001-2014) and editorial roles for IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering (2002-2017). The77lab continues advancing rehabilitation robotics through industry partnerships and translational research initiatives.
