Prof. Dr. Hermann W. Bange leads the Chemical Oceanography Working Group at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. His research examines marine biogeochemical cycles, with emphasis on greenhouse gases (N₂O, CH₄, CO) and nitrogen dynamics in coastal and open oceans. He investigates air-sea exchange processes and their climate impacts in regions like the Baltic Sea, Arctic, and oxygen-minimum zones off Peru.
Research interests center on:
- Quantifying oceanic emissions of nitrous oxide and methane
- Nitrogen transformation processes in hypoxic systems
- Effects of climate change (warming, acidification) on trace gas cycling
- Coastal and estuarine biogeochemistry
Recent publications (2019–2025) focus on Arctic gas fluxes, global N₂O budgets, and hypoxia-driven biogeochemistry. Work includes field campaigns in polar regions and collaborative global syntheses.
He directs field operations at time-series stations (e.g., Boknis Eck) and contributes to international ocean observing networks.
