Hermann W. Bange

Prof. Dr. Hermann W. Bange leads the Chemical Oceanography Working Group at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. His research examines marine biogeochemical cycles, with emphasis on greenhouse gases (N₂O, CH₄, CO) and nitrogen dynamics in coastal and open oceans. He investigates air-sea exchange processes and their climate impacts in regions like the Baltic Sea, Arctic, and oxygen-minimum zones off Peru.

Research interests center on:

• Quantifying oceanic emissions of nitrous oxide and methane
• Nitrogen transformation processes in hypoxic systems
• Effects of climate change (warming, acidification) on trace gas cycling
