Herman de Regt is an Associate Professor at Tilburg University's Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (Department of Philosophy). His research focuses on the philosophy of science, distinguishing science from pseudoscience, and the societal role of scientific expertise. He critiques scientism while exploring themes like serendipity in scientific discovery and the feeling of understanding in scientific explanations.
Recent work includes analyzing Charles Peirce's pragmatist insights on scientific understanding, arguing that evolutionary biases in human cognition can lead to pseudoscientific beliefs. He also examines unintended discoveries in science and advocates for balanced educational curricula integrating science with humanities.
De Regt engages in public discourse, such as critiquing the Deventer murder case verdict for logical flaws and participating in debates on science communication. He has over 100 publications, including chapters in the Oxford Handbook of Charles S. Peirce and articles in Filosofie-Tijdschrift.
