Dr. Herman De Vries serves as Professor of Dutch and German and holds the Frederik Meijer Chair in Dutch Language and Culture within Calvin College's Department of World Languages. He concurrently leads the American Association for Netherlandic Studies (AANS) as President since 2021.
His academic foundation includes a BA in German from Calvin College (1988), MA in German from University of Cincinnati (1990), and PhD in Germanic Languages and Literatures from University of Cincinnati (1996). His doctoral research examined Nicolaus Selnecker's Psalter Commentary (1565): A Documentary Study on Psalm Versification.
Professor De Vries specializes in early-modern German literary traditions, Enlightenment-era scholarship, and contemporary Dutch linguistic evolution. His teaching portfolio spans Dutch language instruction, German literature surveys from Romanticism through the 20th century, and specialized courses in Germanic philology. Editorial leadership forms a critical component of his academic service, notably through editorship of Focus on Literatur and contributions to the Lessing Yearbook.
His professional engagement manifests through sustained editorial stewardship including EUROTECH Newsletter (University of Connecticut, 1996-1997), Assistant Editorship for Focus on Literatur volumes (1994-1995), and editorial assistance for the Lessing Yearbook (1993). As AANS President, he directs national scholarship on Netherlandic studies while maintaining active classroom instruction in German and Dutch curricula.
