Prof. Herbert Deppe is a Professor of Dental Surgery and Implantology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), based at the Klinikum rechts der Isar. He leads the Clinic and Policlinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within the TUM School of Medicine and Health. His research focuses on improving dental implant longevity, bone tissue regeneration, and systemic-disease interactions, leveraging interdisciplinary collaboration through the DFG’s Collaborative Research Centre 438.
Deppe completed his dentistry training at LMU Munich, achieving board certification in oral surgery in 1993. He has held his professorship at TUM since 2004 and serves on the scientific advisory board of the German Society for Laser Dentistry (since 2002), the Bavarian Regional Dental Chamber’s Audit Committee for Oral Surgery, and as a medical consultant for the German Armed Forces. He became a European specialist in implantology in 2006.
His research emphasizes oral bacteria’s role in systemic infections (e.g., endocarditis, prosthetic joint infections) and innovative laser-assisted therapies for peri-implant defects. Awards include the Herd Research Foundation Prize (2008) and DGI’s Annual Best Prize (2005).
Deppe’s work bridges clinical practice and academic research, with a focus on translational advancements in implantology, bone regeneration, and laser technologies. His contributions include pioneering studies on CO₂ laser applications and membrane-based regenerative techniques.
