Henry Siu is a Professor of Economics at the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver School of Economics, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. He is a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and Academic Director of the Centre for Innovative Data in Economics Research (CIDER). His research focuses on macroeconomics, labor markets, and the impacts of automation on employment, particularly the decline of middle-class jobs and jobless recoveries. He has held visiting positions at the Federal Reserve Banks (Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Philadelphia), the Reserve Bank of Australia, and the Bank of Canada.
Education: PhD in Economics from Northwestern University. Awards include the inaugural Bank of Canada Governor’s Award for macroeconomic research contributions. Teaching includes courses on intermediate macroeconomics and principles of macroeconomics. Professional affiliations include the Canadian Macroeconomics Study Group (CMSG) Secretariat, Canadian Economics Association Board, and Labour Market Information Council Experts Panel.
Key research themes include occupational polarization, business cycle dynamics, and policy responses to technological change. His work on automation’s impact on labor markets has shaped debates on economic inequality and workforce adaptation. Recent studies analyze pandemic-related labor disruptions and the role of in-person schooling in economic activity.
