Henry L. Bart, Jr. is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Tulane University's School of Science and Engineering, where he also directs the Tulane University Biodiversity Research Institute (TUBRI). He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of New Orleans and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Oklahoma. His research focuses on the ecology, systematics, and biodiversity of freshwater fishes and amphibians, with emphasis on taxonomic diversity, morphological evolution, and responses to environmental change.
Research interests span freshwater ichthyology, evolutionary morphology, conservation biology, and biogeography, with fieldwork across North America and Africa. His publications demonstrate a strong trend toward integrative taxonomy, combining molecular phylogenetics and morphological analysis to describe new species and revise classifications, particularly in understudied African and North American freshwater systems.
Dr. Bart mentors graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in ecology and systematics, overseeing the Royal D. Suttkus Fish Collection. He established TUBRI as a hub for biodiversity informatics and leads digitization initiatives like GEOLocate and Fishnet2.
