Henry Fuchs is the Federico Gil Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career spans decades of innovation in computer graphics, focusing on rendering algorithms, hardware development, and virtual environments.
- Education: Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Utah (1975); B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz (1970).
Research Interests:
Since the early 1970s, Fuchs has pioneered advancements in computer graphics, including foundational work on BSP Trees and the development of graphics hardware such as Pixel-Planes and PixelFlow. His research extends to virtual environments, tele-immersion systems, and their applications in medicine.
Scientific Awards:
Recipient of the ACM SIGGRAPH Steven A. Coons Award (2015), the IEEE-VGTC Virtual Reality Career Award (2013), and the Satava Award (1997). He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2018, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from TU Wien.
