Dr. Henry Clements is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Warwick, based in the Department of History within the Faculty of Arts. He previously served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Oxford (2023–2024). His work examines the intellectual and religious history of the late Ottoman Empire and modern Middle East, focusing on concepts such as religion, race, politics, history, and translational frameworks that shaped post-Ottoman societies.
He holds a PhD, MPhil, and MA from Yale University, alongside a BA from Washington University in St. Louis. His research explores how minority communities navigated secularizing transformations in the Ottoman context, with theoretical engagements on modernity and Western historiography. Recent publications include articles on postcolonialism, communal documentation, and the 'millet' paradigm, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach.
Clements teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, including HI280 (The Ottoman Empire), HI993 (Themes in Religious Cultures), and HI998 (Themes in Modern History). While no grants or awards are explicitly listed, his scholarly contributions emphasize critical analyses of historical concepts and their contemporary implications.
