Henry Charteris (c.1565–1628) was the second Principal of the University of Edinburgh (1599–1620) and later Professor of Divinity (1626–1629). As a scholar, he focused on theology, biblical exegesis, and classical languages, producing commentaries on Pauline Epistles and contributing to posthumous editions of Robert Rollock's works. His Greek and Latin verses, such as those in The Muses Welcome to the High and Mightie Prince James (1618), reflect his engagement with courtly intellectual circles.
Charteris studied at Edinburgh University from its founding in 1583, graduating in 1587. His academic career included roles as Regent (1589) and later dual roles as Principal and Professor of Theology until his resignation in 1620 due to salary disputes. He returned as Professor of Divinity in 1626, focusing on advanced theological instruction for ministry candidates.
His research interests spanned Reformed theology, biblical scholarship, and classical philology, with publications emphasizing doctrinal precision and historical context. His legacy includes 23 children, including Laurence Charteris, who succeeded him in the Divinity professorship. Charteris’ career illustrates the intertwined roles of academia and ministry in 17th-century Scottish intellectual life.
