Henk-Jan Hoving

Dr. Henk-Jan Hoving leads the Deep-Sea Biology Research Group at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research. His research examines life histories, biodiversity, and food web ecology of deep-sea organisms, with emphasis on cephalopods and gelatinous zooplankton. He investigates the role of pelagic fauna in carbon transport and ecosystem functioning.

Research focuses on: 1) Ecological adaptations of deep-sea organisms 2) Carbon flux through marine food webs 3) Biodiversity patterns in oxygen minimum zones 4) In-situ observation technology development. His team uses submersibles, camera systems, and environmental DNA analysis to study elusive oceanic fauna.

Expeditions include multiple research cruises in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans. Awards include the prestigious Emmy Noether Junior Research Group award from the German Research Foundation.
