Prof. Hendrika Bootsma is a Professor of Rheumatology and Head of the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Medical Sciences. She is also a member of the Executive Board of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). Her primary expertise lies in systemic autoimmune diseases, particularly Sjögren’s Syndrome, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, and Systemic Scleroderma.
- Education: Doctor of Medicine (Leiden University, 1986), Postdoctoral training in Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, and Epidemiology.
Her research focuses on translational and clinical aspects of autoimmune diseases, including disease pathogenesis, diagnostic criteria, and treatment efficacy. Notable contributions include studies on salivary gland inflammation, OMERACT score applications, and systemic disease activity assessment using ESSDAI. Recent work highlights include evaluating Abatacept’s limited efficacy in Sjögren’s patients and exploring lymphoma prediction in Sjögren’s disease.
Awards include the EULAR Abstract Award (2020) and Duncan A. Gordon Award (2019). She leads multiple initiatives, including the Dutch Working Group on Sjögren’s Syndrome and the 16th International Symposium on Sjögren’s Disease. Her clinical and academic leadership extends to roles in medical advisory boards and educational programs.
