Dr Hema Preya Selvanathan is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Psychology, University of Queensland. She earned her PhD in Social Psychology (2019) with a concentration in the Psychology of Peace and Violence from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Hema's research focuses on social change, intergroup relations, social movements, and collective action. She examines these dynamics through quantitative and qualitative methods in laboratory, online, and field settings across global regions. Her recent work includes analyzing far-right movements, stigma responses in marginalized groups, and allyship mechanisms in racial justice contexts.
Her publications appear in Leadership Quarterly, British Journal of Social Psychology, Group Processes & Intergroup Relations, and Political Psychology. Her 2023-2025 studies reveal trends in media influence on far-right attitudes, nonlinear stigma-action relationships, and allyship strategies for marginalized groups. She received the 2023 Early Career Research Award from the Society of Australasian Social Psychologists.
Hema serves as Associate Editor for the British Journal of Social Psychology and holds editorial roles in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Personality and Social Psychology Review, and Social and Personality Psychology Compass. Her supervisory work includes PhD projects on topics like inter-religion intolerance, climate action, and transgender inclusion.
