Helena Legido-Quigley is an Associate Professor at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore (NUS). She holds a BSc in Sociology from the University of Barcelona/Reading, an MSc in Policy Studies from the University of Edinburgh, and a PhD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Her career includes roles as Research Fellow and Lecturer at LSHTM, and she previously managed an AIDS Programme in South Africa.
Her research focuses on health systems strengthening, chronic disease management, and the impact of austerity on healthcare. Key areas include global health architecture (e.g., AIDS response in Southeast Asia), migrant healthcare experiences, and policy implementation in conflict zones like South Sudan. She investigates hypertension prevention in Colombia and evaluates cross-border healthcare challenges in Europe and Spain.
Her publications span The Lancet, BMJ, and PLOS Medicine, addressing themes like UK global health contributions, telemedicine barriers, and the erosion of universal healthcare in Spain under austerity. Her work bridges policy analysis with qualitative studies on patient experiences and healthcare equity.
Legido-Quigley’s research underscores the interplay between economic policies, health systems, and population health outcomes. She advocates for evidence-based approaches to healthcare access, particularly for marginalized groups including migrants and retirees abroad.
