Helen White

Helen White serves as Provost and The William H. and Johanna A. Harris Professor in Environmental Studies and Chemistry at Haverford College. Her research focuses on marine environmental chemistry, particularly the fate of oil and plastic pollutants in ocean systems.

Her educational background includes:

• 2000: M. Chem. Master of Chemistry, Minor in American Studies from the University of Sussex (U.K.)
• 2006: Ph.D. in Chemical Oceanography from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)
• 2007-2009: Postdoctoral Fellow in the Microbial Science Initiative at Harvard University

White's research investigates the persistence and transformation of human-derived compounds in the marine environment, with emphasis on oil spills and plastic waste. She examines how chemical structure, physical associations, and bioavailability influence pollutant cycling and fate. Her interdisciplinary work bridges chemistry, oceanography, and environmental science, often involving student collaborators.
