Professor Helen Sneddon is a Professor of Sustainable Chemistry and Director of the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE) at the University of York. She co-directs two Centres for Doctoral Training: Process Industries: Net Zero (PINZ CDT) with Newcastle University and Chemical Synthesis for a Healthy Planet (CSHP CDT) with the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on four core themes: renewable feedstocks, green synthesis, sustainable technologies, and design for sustainable reuse/degradation/recovery.
Her group explores biobased monomer production, solvent optimization via Design of Experiments, greener peptide synthesis methods, and halogen bond alternatives in pharmaceuticals. Collaborations include industry partners Syngenta and Synthomer. Key publications include advancements in reaction optimization (2024) and sustainable peptide synthesis (2017).
Research training involves supervising PhD students in areas like trifluoromethyl bioisosteres, bio-based polymers, and solvent safety alternatives. Technical support is provided by team members like Emma Dux. Professional experience includes leadership in green chemistry education and industrial partnerships.
