Helen Runyan, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Director of the M.A. in Counseling Programs within the School of Psychology & Counseling. She specializes in trauma, veterans’ mental health, and school counseling, integrating Christian worldview principles into ethical practice. Dr. Runyan holds a B.S. in Psychology from Regent University and advanced degrees in Counseling from Old Dominion University. Her work includes clinical service with veterans via The Headstrong Project and volunteer roles in disaster behavioral health through the Virginia Beach Medical Reserve Corps. She co-founded the Women’s Resource Collaborative to provide affordable mental health care for trauma victims.
Her research focuses on trauma, phenomenological studies, and Delphi methodology. She actively serves in numerous counseling organizations, including leadership roles as Treasurer of the Virginia Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development and Past-President of the Virginia Counselors Association. Dr. Runyan also contributes as a reviewer for the Journal of School Counseling.
Her volunteer work spans military family support, crisis team memberships, and church-based initiatives. Her professional certifications include Licensed Professional Counselor (VA), National Certified Counselor, and CPT-certified provider.
