Dr. Helen Onyeaka is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, specializing in industrial microbiology with over 25 years of combined academic and industry experience. She holds a PhD in Biochemical Engineering (University of Birmingham, 2004) and has led research in microbial responses to environmental stress, food safety, and sustainable bioprocessing. Her awards include the Bridon Postgraduate Award (2003) and Royal Academy of Engineering recognition (2003).
Dr. Onyeaka teaches Food Microbiology, Food Safety, and Bioprocess Engineering across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. She supervises PhD/MSc projects on food safety, antimicrobial resistance, and environmental bioremediation. Her training initiatives include CPD courses for Food Safety Inspectors and Saudi Food and Drug Authority professionals.
Her research emphasizes food waste valorization, natural preservatives, and nanomaterial safety. She collaborates with international organizations and supports community initiatives addressing mental health and poverty. Recent publications focus on pandemic-related food fraud, HIV/AIDS syndemics in Africa, and innovative food processing techniques.
