Dr Keyes' research spans three interconnected domains: population-level health and wellbeing improvement through public health initiatives; higher education student engagement, employability and mental health strategies; and road user behavior analysis focusing on visual perception in cycling and driving contexts. Her work bridges cognitive psychology with practical applications in transportation safety and educational design, consistently emphasizing real-world impact.
Her recent publications (2022-2024) demonstrate a strategic shift toward large-scale international health studies examining adolescent risk behaviors across 30+ countries, while maintaining her foundational expertise in cognitive mechanisms of visual perception. This dual focus reveals her ability to translate laboratory-based psychological principles into global public health solutions, particularly in road safety and youth wellbeing.
She actively supervises doctoral research in visual and aural perception related to road user behavior, with funded projects including a BA/Leverhulme grant on driver-motorcycle interactions and consultancy work with local councils to enhance cycling infrastructure. Her leadership extends to ARU's Applied Social Change Research Hub and Cognition Group, where she integrates research with community impact initiatives.
Within university governance, Dr Keyes serves as Governor of Cambridge and Peterborough Foundation Trust, chairs the Student Wellbeing Strategy Steering Group, and leads curriculum integration of mental health support. Her media contributions—including features in The Washington Post and Naked Neuroscience—demonstrate her commitment to public engagement with psychological science.
