Helen Johnston is Professor of Criminology at the University of Hull, where she is affiliated with the Criminology department and contributes to the Cultures of Incarceration Centre and The Heritage Consortium. She is the first female Professor of Criminology at the University of Hull and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, reflecting her leadership in both research and teaching.
Her research interests center on the history of crime and punishment, particularly focusing on prisons and imprisonment from 1750 onward. She explores the experiences of prisoners and prison staff, the evolution of prison architecture, the geographies of incarceration, and the cultural memory of crime and justice. Her current projects include the impact of the Second World War on the prison system and the penal outcomes for girls and young women in the 20th century.
Her recent publications reflect a strong trajectory in historical criminology, with a focus on gender, disability, health, and institutional practices in Victorian and 20th-century prisons. Themes across her work include moral contamination, prison education, bereavement, and long-term imprisonment, particularly among women. Her interdisciplinary approach combines archival research with theoretical insights from sociology, history, and criminology.
Helen Johnston has secured research funding from major national bodies including the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council, the British Academy, and the Leverhulme Trust. Her collaborative projects highlight her role as a principal and co-investigator in advancing knowledge in penal history.
She actively supervises PhD students and has successfully guided numerous doctoral candidates to completion. Her advisees have explored topics such as trafficking, colonial penality, modern slavery, juvenile crime, and prisoner education, reflecting the breadth and depth of her academic mentorship.
She is involved in significant research groups including the Cultures of Incarceration Centre and The Heritage Consortium, which support interdisciplinary research on punishment, heritage, and justice. These centers facilitate public engagement, preservation of crime heritage, and dissemination through museums and archives.
