Helen Fenwick is the Associate Dean for Education in the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education at the University of Hull, and a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology within the Department of History. She earned her BA in Archaeology from the University of York and completed her part-time PhD in 2007 at the University of Hull, focusing on settlement development in the Lincolnshire Marsh. Her roles have included School Academic Manager for Histories, Languages and Cultures (2016–2019) and co-director of the Brodsworth Community Archaeology Project (2004–2015).
Her research centers on medieval landscapes, including deserted settlements, moated sites, and Egyptian urban studies (e.g., Tell el-Amarna). She leads initiatives like the 'Beresford’s Lost Villages' website, digitizing records of deserted medieval villages. Fenwick actively employs digital tools such as Minecraft and LEGO in teaching modules like Human Worlds and The Vikings and their World, emphasizing digital literacy and innovative pedagogy.
She chairs the Medieval Settlement Research Group and serves as Honorary Treasurer for the Society for Medieval Archaeology. Her recent work includes writing up a landscape survey of the Egyptian city of Tell el-Amarna and investigating Templar sites in East Yorkshire.
