Helen Dejean is a PhD student and Associate Lecturer at The Courtauld Institute of Art, specializing in Byzantine art history and iconography. She is currently engaged in part-time doctoral research focusing on the iconography of the Prophet Moses in Byzantine art, supervised by Professor Antony Eastmond. Her academic roles include teaching and lecturing at institutions such as City Lit, The Landmark Arts Centre, and The Arts Society.
Helen’s research interests center on Byzantine visual culture, with a focus on iconography, palaeography, and the interplay of religious narratives in art. Her work explores themes like pilgrimage, materiality, and the transmission of artistic traditions between Byzantium and its neighbors.
She has received notable scholarships, including the Research England award (2024) and the Lowden-Cannon Travel Fund (2023), supporting her fieldwork and studies. Her expertise also extends to Italo-Byzantine art of the thirteenth century and the reception of public imagery in historical contexts.
