Helen Deeming

Helen Deeming is a musicologist specializing in medieval music, particularly Latin, French, and English song repertoires from the 12th to 15th centuries. She holds an affiliation with the Department of Music at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her work focuses on manuscript studies, music notation, and the social contexts of medieval music.

Education includes studies in music and medieval history at the University of Cambridge, culminating in a Ph.D. on English medieval music. She held the Senior Rouse Ball Research Studentship at Trinity College, Cambridge (2004-05), and previously taught at the University of Southampton before joining Royal Holloway in 2009.

Research interests include graphic representation of musical sound in medieval art, institutional contexts of music, and the interplay between notation and performance. Major contributions include the Musica Britannica volume Songs in British Sources (2013) and co-editing Manuscripts and Medieval Song (2015). Current projects involve contributions to the Cambridge History of Medieval Music.

Funded projects include the British Academy-supported Manuscripts of British Song (2011-2012) and the AHRC-funded Medieval Song Network (2010-2011). Her work appears in journals like Music & Letters, Early Music, and Scriptorium.
