Dr. Helen Burchett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health, Environments and Society within the Faculty of Public Health and Policy at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She has held positions at LSHTM since 2010, progressing from Research Fellow (2010-2011) to Assistant Professor (2011-2020) and currently Associate Professor (2020-present).
Her educational background includes a PhD from LSHTM (2010) focused on researchers' and policy stakeholders' perceptions of research relevance to policy in Ghana, an MSc in Reproductive & Sexual Health Research (2006), an MSc in Health Promotion Sciences (2000), and an MA(Hons) in Psychology & Sociology from the University of Edinburgh (1998). She also holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching from LSHTM (2015).
Dr. Burchett's research focuses on the interplay between context, interventions and people to understand how or why interventions may work (or not work), with special interest in the generalisability of evaluation research across settings. She has conducted systematic reviews, intervention evaluations, and qualitative and mixed methods research studies. Her recent projects include systematic reviews of remote/digital interventions for drug/alcohol misuse treatment and structural interventions for adolescent contraceptive use in low- and middle-income countries. She has also analyzed data from malaria rapid diagnostic test implementations across six countries and studied weight management programs for young children.
Dr. Burchett teaches on the MSc in Public Health program, organizing the 'Foundations of Health Promotion' module and teaching on 'Evaluation of Public Health Interventions'. She supervises DrPH and PhD students. Her research is supported by multiple grants, including projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Medical Research Council, and Department of Health.
Dr. Burchett is affiliated with several research centers at LSHTM, including the Centre for Evaluation, the Malaria Centre, and the Centre for Maternal Adolescent Reproductive & Child Health. Her research spans multiple disciplines including public health, implementation science, health systems research, and evidence synthesis methodology.
