Heinrich M. Jaeger is the Sewell Avery Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Physics and James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on soft condensed matter, particularly granular materials and far-from-equilibrium systems. He earned his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Minnesota in 1987, followed by a postdoc at the University of Chicago before joining its faculty in 1991. His work explores jamming phenomena, ultrasonic levitation, and the design of smart materials. Notable achievements include studies on shear jamming in suspensions and granular systems, with applications in robotics and architecture.
Education: Ph.D. in Physics, University of Minnesota (1987). Postdoctoral research at University of Chicago and Senior Researcher at Delft Institute for Microelectronics (Netherlands).
Research Interests: Granular materials, soft matter physics, jamming transitions, ultrasonic manipulation of particles, and non-Newtonian suspensions. His lab investigates stress-adaptive materials, shear-induced phase transitions, and self-assembly at nanoscales.
