Heine Alexander Holmen is a Professor and Head of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies (IFR) at NTNU since 2021. Previously, he served as Associate Professor and Deputy Head at the University of Tromsø (UiT) from 2013–2021. He holds a PhD from the University of Oslo (UiO) and has conducted research at Rutgers University, Birkbeck College, and Princeton. His research focuses on ethics, existential philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, and feminist philosophy, addressing themes like death, meaning, agency, and evil. He leads the 'Agency and Action' research group and co-edits Norsk Filosofisk Tidsskrift. Holmen is active in public dissemination through media appearances and podcasts, discussing philosophical issues like death and ethics.

His research explores existential questions through interdisciplinary lenses, including Action and the Problem of Evil (2015) and Why Die (2017). As department head, he oversees strategic planning, personnel management, and faculty collaboration within the Humanities Faculty.
Holmen’s recent work addresses applied ethics in leadership and societal challenges, such as combating toxic masculinity in academia. He also explores the therapeutic role of philosophy in confronting existential anxieties like mortality.
