Prof. Heike Mayer is a Full Professor of Economic Geography at the University of Bern's Geographical Institute, leading the Economic Geography Unit and serving as Deputy Director of the Center for Regional Economic Development (CRED). She has held adjunct roles at Virginia Tech and visiting professorships at institutions like the University of Bayreuth and Pisa. Her research focuses on entrepreneurship, sustainable regional development, innovation in peripheral areas, and urban-rural linkages. Key affiliations include the Regional Studies Association (President since 2024) and editorial roles in journals like Regional Studies and Progress in Economic Geography.
Research Interests: Entrepreneurship and innovation in peripheral regions, sustainable development strategies, capital city dynamics, globalization impacts, and policy frameworks for regional resilience. Recent work explores transformative agency in SMEs, post-growth paradigms, and digital multilocality in Switzerland.
