Dr. Heidi Verplaetse is a Senior Lecturer at KU Leuven's Faculty of Arts and leads the Center for Applied Language Research. She actively contributes to the Research Group Quantitative Lexicology and Variational Linguistics (QLVL) at Antwerp Campuses, while also serving on the Faculty Council of Arts and Campus Council of the Faculty of Arts, Antwerp.
Research Focus: Her work bridges translation studies, discourse analysis, and applied linguistics, with particular emphasis on:
- Transcreation processes in media and advertising
- Coherence and simplification in popular-scientific communication
- Evidentiality patterns across specialized and lay texts
- Translation pedagogy using standardized evaluation frameworks
- Linguistic analysis of travel writing and cross-cultural narratives
Recent Contributions: She explores metaphor adaptation in journalistic transediting, evaluates translation quality through comparative L1/L2 student studies, and investigates collaborative workflows in translator training, publishing extensively in Palgrave Macmillan, Academia Press, and Cambridge Scholars Publishing.
Leadership: As promotor for projects like 'Cognitive-functional analysis of grammaticalized discourse', she drives interdisciplinary research connecting language professionals and academic communities.
