Her work bridges political history, refugee historiography, and welfare studies, with a particular emphasis on Denmark and Scandinavia.
She has contributed to major projects like De udstødte, de uvelkomne og de beundrede (2022–2026) and co-edited volumes on Nordic refugee histories and citizen categorization. Her academic activities include supervising PhD students, teaching courses on Danish welfare systems and refugee history, and serving on advisory boards for organizations like Rigsarkivets rådgivende forskningsudvalg.
Jønsson has received the Arbejderhistorieprisen in 2014 for her scholarly contributions. Her research addresses pressing issues such as refugee admission frameworks, the interplay between humanitarian obligations and state policies, and the evolving role of statistics in shaping welfare policies.
