Heidi Pearson is a Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Alaska Southeast, holding positions in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Natural Sciences. She is affiliated with the Biology & Marine Biology Program and leads the BREACH Marine Mammal Research Lab. Currently on sabbatical for Fall 2025, she maintains her primary academic base at UAS Juneau Campus.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Marine Biology from Texas A&M University (2008)
- B.S. from Duke University (1998)
Dr. Pearson's research centers on marine mammal ecology and conservation biology, with emphasis on Alaskan ecosystems. Her work investigates behavioral patterns, habitat utilization, and anthropogenic impacts on marine species through interdisciplinary field studies. This research contributes significantly to marine conservation policy and ecosystem management in high-latitude regions.
She directs the BREACH Marine Mammal Research Lab, which provides hands-on research opportunities for undergraduate students through fieldwork in Southeast Alaska's coastal environments. The lab focuses on long-term ecological monitoring and collaborates with state/federal agencies on conservation initiatives.
