Dr. Heidi J.S. Tworek is a Canada Research Chair and Professor of International History and Public Policy at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where she directs the Centre for the Study of Democratic Institutions. Her research focuses on the intersection of communications, technology, and democracy, with a particular emphasis on the historical and policy dimensions of media technologies. She holds visiting fellowships at institutions such as Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and Birkbeck, University of London. Tworek earned her BA from Cambridge University and her MA/PhD in History from Harvard University.
Her work includes award-winning publications like News from Germany: The Competition to Control World Communications, 1900-1945, and she co-edits the Journal of Global History. She is a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and a non-resident fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Canadian Global Affairs Institute. Tworek’s research has been supported by grants from the Canada Research Chair program, SSHRC, and others. She advises governments globally on media and digital policy and contributes to major media outlets like The New York Times and Foreign Affairs.
Tworek’s scientific awards include the Canada Research Chair designation and membership in the Royal Society of Canada. Her current projects address global platform governance, health communications, and interwar history. She advocates for evidence-based policy and democratic resilience in the face of technological and informational challenges.
