Dr. Heidi Catherine Gearhart is a part-time lecturer in the Art History department at George Mason University. Her research focuses on medieval European art, art theory, craft and manufacture, and museum histories. She has previously taught at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Assumption College, and the University of Michigan.
- Education: Ph.D. from University of Michigan, MA and Museum Studies Certificate from Tufts University, BA from Pomona College.
Her seminal book, Theophilus and the Theory and Practice of Medieval Art (Penn State University Press, 2017), explores the High Middle Ages treatise On Diverse Arts, earning an Honorable Mention for the International Center of Medieval Art Book Prize. She is currently researching how artists and art-making were remembered in pre-modern Europe.
Dr. Gearhart's recent publications address topics including medieval memory practices, artistic labor, and material hierarchies. Her work has appeared in journals such as Gesta, Studies in Iconography, and Word & Image. She teaches courses on medieval European art, Byzantine art, and art of the Islamic world.
