Hegyi Péter

Péter Hegyi is a Professor and Director of the Centre for Translational Medicine at the Medical School of the University of Pécs, Hungary. Previously, he held full-time professorial positions at the University of Szeged's Faculty of Medicine (2012-2016) and has served in part-time roles including research group leadership at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His academic career includes roles as visiting researcher at the University of Liverpool and Newcastle University, UK. He holds advanced medical degrees including a habilitation (2008), Clinical Pharmacologist certification (2018), and Gastroenterology specialization (2013).

His research focuses on pancreatic physiology/pathophysiology, acute/chronic pancreatitis mechanisms, gastrointestinal ion transport, and clinical trial design. Key contributions include discoveries about CFTR dysfunction in pancreatitis and bile acid effects on epithelial cells. He has published 194 articles (H-index 35) in leading journals like Gastroenterology and Physiol Rev, with 69 publications in the last three years.

Honors include the 2023 APS Lars Onsager Prize and the 2008 Bolyai Prize. He leads international collaborations through grants totaling 9.2 million Euros, including prestigious Momentum Grants from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. As a mentor, he has guided 20 PhD graduates and numerous students who've achieved global academic positions. His editorial roles include associate editorships for Acta Physiologica and Frontiers of Physiology.

Professional leadership includes presidency of the European Pancreatic Club and roles in the European GI Federation. He has delivered 83 invited lectures worldwide, including at NIH and the Royal Society.
