Hector Postigo serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Media Studies and Production at Temple University's Lew Klein College of Media and Communication, with office contact at 2020 North Broad St. (215-204-7398).
His academic credentials include:
- PhD in Science and Technology Studies from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute
- MS in Physiology and Neurobiology from University of Connecticut
Postigo's research centers on two critical domains: First, the political economy of digital cultural production, examining value creation and 'free' labor through case studies of video game modding communities and AOL volunteer networks. Second, technologically mediated activism, analyzing how ICTs, hacks, and circumvention tools empower social movements, particularly within digital rights/free culture frameworks. His current investigations span Web 2.0's impact on social change organizations, platform privacy dynamics, and security industry marketing practices.
He has secured major funding from the European Commission 7th Programme Framework and National Science Foundation (with Tarleton Gillespie), resulting in an MIT Press monograph on digital activism and a Palgrave Macmillan co-edited volume on privacy industries. Postigo co-founded the influential blog Culture Digitally and teaches undergraduate courses including MSP 3324/4324 (The Video Game Industry and Game Culture) and MSP 4221 (Information Technology Policy).
