Heather Sutton serves as Core Assistant Professor and Chair of Somatic Counseling at Naropa University, where she has taught since 2005 across MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs with concentrations in Somatic Counseling and Dance/Movement Theories & Practice.
Her educational foundation includes:
- BA in Special Physical Education and Motor Development, Bridgewater State College
- MA in Somatic Counseling Psychology: Dance/Movement Theories & Practice, Naropa University
Professor Sutton specializes in integrating body-based approaches into mental health practice, with research emphasis on dance/movement therapy for crisis intervention and underserved populations. Her clinical expertise spans 20 years in behavioral health evaluation and suicide risk assessment, directly informing her community initiatives like adaptive dance programming.
She actively bridges academia and practice through courses including Current Methods and Skills in Psychotherapy, Applied Anatomy and Neuroscience, and Body Psychotherapy Concentration. Her leadership extends to community partnerships where she develops therapeutic dance frameworks for vulnerable groups.
