Heather Hume

Heather Hume is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Montreal, and a Visiting Professor at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. Affiliated with CHU Sainte-Justine since 1985, she previously served as Medical Director of the Transfusion Service and Comprehensive Care Program for Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies (1985-2000) and Executive Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine at Canadian Blood Services (2001-2009).

Her research centers on non-malignant pediatric hematology and transfusion medicine, with specialized focus on sickle cell disease and hemoglobinopathies. She actively advances clinical practices through leadership in Quebec's National Advisory Committee on Transfusion Medicine and collaborative work between Montreal and Kampala.

Dr. Hume directs key clinical programs including the Comprehensive Care Program for Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies and the hospital Transfusion Service, integrating patient care, policy development, and international capacity building in resource-limited settings.
