Dr. Heather Buss is an Associate Professor in Biogeochemical Weathering at the University of Bristol's School of Earth Sciences. Her expertise spans aqueous geochemistry, biogeochemistry, and geomicrobiology, with a focus on nutrient cycling at rock-soil interfaces and critical zone processes. She investigates weathering dynamics in tropical and agricultural systems, integrating fieldwork, isotope tracing, and microbial ecology.
Research interests include mineral weathering kinetics, phosphorus cycling in aquifers, and the impacts of livestock excreta on pasture nutrient dynamics. She collaborates with colleagues such as Prof. Rich Pancost (Biogeochemistry) and Prof. Penny Johnes (Biogeochemistry) on interdisciplinary projects.
Recent work emphasizes the role of secondary minerals in tropical weathering, microbial mediation of weathering processes, and the environmental impacts of hydraulic fracturing chemicals. Her publications highlight novel applications of isotopic techniques (e.g., Li, Mg, N isotopes) to trace biogeochemical pathways.
In teaching and outreach, she contributes to the School of Earth Sciences' academic programs and engages with media through the University's PR team. Her research addresses global challenges in sustainable agriculture, water quality, and climate change mitigation.
