Prof. Dror Hawlena is a Senior Lecturer at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Department of Ecology, Evolution & Behavior, within the Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences. His research focuses on predator-prey interactions, stress ecology, and ecosystem dynamics. He leads the Risk-Management Ecology lab, exploring how organisms manage risk and its ecological consequences.
Education: PhD (Ben-Gurion University, 2007), MSc (Ben-Gurion University, 2001), BSc (Ben-Gurion University, 1998). Professional roles include former Chief Ecologist at Israel Nature and Parks Authority and postdoctoral work at Yale University.
Research Interests: Functional ecology of food-web dynamics, predator-prey interactions, desert ecology, and ecosystem conservation. Current projects integrate physiology, behavior, and ecosystem processes to understand context-dependent ecological responses.
Awards: ERC Starting Grant (2013), Rector's Award (2023), Merav Ziv Awards (PhD/MSc). His lab includes PhD students like Moshe Zaguri and Nevo Sagi, focusing on topics like nutrient cycling and predation risk effects.
Key grants: ERC-funded ECOSTRESS project (€1.38M), Israel Science Foundation grants, and interdisciplinary collaborations on locust swarming and climate impacts.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Hawlena Lab, collaborating internationally on predator-prey dynamics and ecosystem resilience. Active in mentoring and interdisciplinary research training programs.
