Harvey G. Cohen

Dr Harvey G. Cohen is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural & Creative Industries at King's College London's Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He holds a PhD in U.S. and cultural history from the University of Maryland (2002) and has been at King's since 2006. His research focuses on cultural history, film, music industries, American/African American history, museums, publishing, and New York City. He has authored award-winning books like Duke Ellington’s America (2010) and Who’s In The Money? (2018), which explore intersections between culture, politics, and business.

Education:

• PhD in U.S. and Cultural History, University of Maryland (2002)

Research Interests: The history and business of cinema, popular music, museums, and publishing in the U.S. and U.K., with a focus on African American cultural contributions, New York City’s cultural landscape, and the Harlem Renaissance.

Publications & Awards: Recipient of the 2010 Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Title Award for Duke Ellington’s America. His recent work includes Who’s In The Money?, analyzing Warner Bros. musicals during the Great Depression and their ties to FDR’s New Deal. He has presented globally at venues like the British Library and American Film Institute.

Teaching & Engagement: Teaches courses on music/film industries and cultural history at King’s. He has invited industry guests like Geoff Travis (Rough Trade) to his seminars. His media appearances include BBC Radio 3 and CSPAN.

Research Grants: Secured a Leverhulme Trust grant (2015–2016) for his project on African American gospel music’s historical significance. Collaborated on studies like Jazz comes to the Barbican (2010–2013).
