Harvey B. Lillywhite is a Professor and Director of the Seahorse Key Marine Laboratory at the University of Florida, Department of Biology. His research focuses on the physiological ecology of amphibians and reptiles, with an emphasis on snakes and tree frogs. He also studies conservation biology, fire ecology, and animal coloration. Lillywhite holds a PhD from UCLA (1970), MA from UCLA (1967), and BA from UC Riverside (1966).
His work includes groundbreaking studies on snake cardiovascular adaptations, marine snake osmoregulation, and island biogeography. Key contributions include books like How Snakes Work (2014) and Islands and Snakes (2019). He advises students such as Coleman Sheehy III and Joel Wixson, and collaborates with international researchers on projects like sea snake hydration and evolutionary physiology.
Lillywhite’s articles explore diverse topics, from snake blood pressure regulation to the absence of sea snakes in the Atlantic.
