He holds appointments in the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine division and the Newborn Special Care Unit. His academic journey includes an MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1977), residency and fellowship training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (1980–1983).
Research focuses on neonatal care, developmental biology, and molecular genetics. Notable studies include investigating extubation protocols in preterm infants, the role of homeobox genes (e.g., Hex) in organ development, and the impact of environmental factors like lighting on premature infant behavior. Collaborations with scientists like Clifford Bogue and Monica Konstantino highlight interdisciplinary work.
Key awards include the March of Dimes Basil O'Connor Starter Research Scholarship (1986) and NIH New Investigator Research Award (1984). Clinical expertise spans neonatal critical care and translational research, with contributions to understanding surfactant therapy and B cell development mechanisms.
