Prof. Harold Brommer is a Professor of Equine Surgery and Head of the Department of Clinical Sciences at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He specializes in equine orthopedics and surgery, focusing on regenerative medicine and joint pathology. His research explores cartilage degeneration, osteoarthritis, and innovative treatments using 3D-printed horseshoes and biofabrication techniques. He collaborates internationally with institutions like the University Medical Center Utrecht and the Finnish Biophysics of Bone and Cartilage group. Brommer holds a PhD (2005) and is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS).
Education: Graduated cum laude in Veterinary Medicine from Utrecht University (1998), PhD in 2005 on equine articular cartilage functional failure. Advanced qualifications include the Senior Education Qualification (SKO, 2012) and Basic Education Qualification (BKO, 2005).
Research Interests: Regenerative orthopedics, veterinary clinical research, and biomechanics. Key projects include equine joint disease, gait analysis, and 3D-printed hoof innovations. Collaborates on cartilage repair and imaging techniques (e.g., OCT, MRI).
Publications: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles since 2001, focusing on cartilage degeneration, osteoarthritis, and surgical techniques. Recent work includes studies on vertebral pathologies and regenerative therapies.
Awards: Recognized as a Specialist in Equine Surgery (KNMvD) and ECVS Diplomate. Contributions to high-quality patient care and veterinary specialization training are highlighted.
Teaching & Leadership: Leads equine surgery education and oversees the Faculty's clinical sciences. Involved in veterinary diagnostic imaging and curriculum development. Supervises students in clinical and translational research.
Labs & Teams: Collaborates with the Biofabrication group at UMC Utrecht and international partners on regenerative medicine projects. Active in developing equine-specific diagnostic tools and surgical techniques.
