Harm-Jan Rouwendal is a Postdoctoral researcher in Economic Geography at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Spatial Sciences, Department of Economic Geography. His research focuses on regional labor markets, skill demand, and the spatial effects of automation.
Dr. Rouwendal obtained his bachelor's degree in Human Geography and Spatial Planning and his master's degree (cum laude) in Urban and Economic Geography from Utrecht University. His work explores the relationship between job complexity and urban agglomeration, examining how larger cities require more diverse and complex skill sets from their workers.
His recent publications analyze online job vacancy data to investigate urban labor market dynamics, skill-relatedness, and economic performance across regions. His research has been featured in prominent journals and has received media attention across numerous local Dutch newspapers. Dr. Rouwendal's work on spatial differences in skill demand has been particularly influential in understanding regional economic disparities.
