Magdolna Hargittai is a Research Professor of Chemistry at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) since 2006, affiliated with the Materials Structure and Modeling Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. She has held continuous roles at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1969, including Senior Research Scientist (1978–1991) and Science Advisor (1991–2004). She earned a PhD in Chemistry (1978) and Dr. rer. nat. from Eötvös University, Budapest (1970).
Her research focuses on structural chemistry, computational chemistry, and high-temperature chemistry, with expertise in combining experimental techniques like gas-phase electron diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy. She also explores symmetry principles in chemical systems.
Notable awards include the Szechenyi State Prize (1996), shared with István Hargittai, and an honorary D.Sc. from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Her career spans over five decades, contributing to foundational studies in materials science and theoretical chemistry.
