Harald Bauder is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies and the Graduate Program in Immigration and Settlement Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). He holds external fellowships including the Marie S. Curie FCFP Fellow (2019) and has authored influential works on migration and borders. Bauder earned a PhD in Geography from Wilfrid Laurier University (1998) and MA/BA degrees from Wayne State University (Detroit, USA). His research focuses on migration policies, urban studies, and social justice, challenging conventional state-centric frameworks. Notable awards include Ryerson’s highest research honor, the Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award (2016), and the Konrad Adenauer Research Award (2015) for contributions to German-Canadian academic exchange.
His publications include Migration Borders Freedom (2018) and From Sovereignty to Solidarity (2022), which critique border policies and advocate for open migration frameworks. Bauder also contributes to media outlets like the Globe and Mail and Süddeutsche Zeitung. He founded the Ryerson Centre for Immigration and Settlement (RCIS), advancing interdisciplinary research on migration and urban communities.
