Dr. Hany Sobhi is a full Professor of Organic and Clinical Chemistry at Coppin State University, leading the Center for Organic Synthesis. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Bioanalytical Chemistry (2008) from Cleveland State University and completed an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at Case Western Reserve University (2008–2010). His research focuses on synthesizing bioorganic molecules for clinical diagnostics and understanding disease mechanisms, with a particular emphasis on lipid research, forensic chemistry, and biomedical polymers. Dr. Sobhi has secured grants from NIH, DOD, NASA, and USDA, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in federally funded projects.
Leadership & Awards: Director of the Center for Organic Synthesis and Co-Director of the NIH-IRACDA Program. Notable awards include the 2023 Eagle Excellence in Research Award, 2020 American Physiological Society Award, and multiple grants from NASA and the University System of Maryland. His work has been recognized in top journals, including ACS Omega and Journal of Lipid Research.
Collaborations: Partnerships with NASA-GSFC, DOD APG-ARL, and DHS-CSAC. His lab explores innovative materials for medical devices and drug discovery, with recent breakthroughs in cyclopropane fatty acid detection and bacterial nanocellulose quality analysis.
