Hansel M. Fletcher is an Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Affairs at the School of Medicine, Loma Linda University, and holds Professorships in multiple departments across the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. He serves as Vice Chair of the Department of Basic Sciences, Microbiology Division, and directs the SM-Integrated Biomed Grad Studies PhD program. His academic roles also include leadership in curriculum development, graduate program expansion, and faculty development at HBCUs and international institutions.
Dr. Fletcher’s research focuses on microbial pathogenesis, particularly Porphyromonas gingivalis and Filifactor alocis, investigating their roles in periodontal diseases and systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease. His pioneering work includes genetic tool development for P. gingivalis and elucidating posttranslational regulation mechanisms. He has secured over $14M in research funding, authored 156 publications, and trained 20 graduate students and 12 postdocs, many of whom hold academic or leadership roles.
His professional service includes roles on NIH study sections, editorial boards (e.g., Molecular Oral Microbiology), and leadership in the IADR/AADR, emphasizing diversity and inclusion. Awards include the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award and Northern Caribbean University’s President’s Medallion.
