Hansel J. Otero, MD, is the Director of International Pediatric Radiology Education and Outreach at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), affiliated with the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He leads global education initiatives and teleradiology services through CHOP's Department of Radiology, with active projects in Ethiopia, Botswana, Malawi, Argentina, Peru, Haiti, and Ghana. He also serves as the Outreach Lead for the World Federation of Pediatric Imaging, advancing pediatric radiology education worldwide.
Dr. Otero's research and professional interests center on global pediatric radiology, international medical education, and teleradiology. His work emphasizes improving access to expert radiology services in resource-constrained regions through innovative telemedicine platforms. He has led educational programs and teleradiology support in Africa and Latin America, with a strong focus on sustainable training and capacity building.
His recent publications highlight trends in global telemedicine, particularly the resilience and expansion of store-and-forward networks during the COVID-19 pandemic. These works examine referral patterns, educational strategies, and the critical role of local provider engagement in maintaining telemedicine operations amid international travel disruptions.
